What is a whiplash injury?

Whiplash is a neck soft-tissue injury caused by sudden acceleration-deceleration forces that strain muscles, ligaments, and tendons, typically occurring in car accidents or sports collisions.

A whiplash injury occurs when the neck is thrown forward and backward rapidly due to sudden acceleration-deceleration forces. The most common cause is a rear-end motor vehicle collision, though whiplash can happen in any situation where the head moves suddenly beyond its normal range of motion, such as sports impacts or falls.

During the injury, muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the cervical spine stretch and tear under stress. Symptoms often develop over hours or days rather than immediately and may include neck pain and stiffness, headaches, shoulder tension, and reduced range of motion. Some people experience radiating pain down the arms or difficulty concentrating.

Whiplash presents a key assessment point for chiropractors in the Klang Valley region. Early evaluation helps determine whether the injury involves soft-tissue strain alone or if underlying vertebral alignment has been affected. Chiropractors examine cervical spine mechanics, muscle tension patterns, and nerve involvement to guide treatment decisions. Some injuries resolve within weeks with conservative care, while others require ongoing attention to prevent chronic neck problems.

If you have experienced a sudden neck injury, consulting a chiropractor experienced in sports injury assessment can help identify the extent of soft-tissue damage and appropriate next steps.
