What is trigger point therapy?

Trigger point therapy is a manual treatment that applies sustained pressure to hypersensitive areas within muscle tissue (trigger points) to release tension and reduce referred pain.

Trigger point therapy focuses on specific, irritable spots within muscle tissue that cause localized tightness and pain radiating to distant areas of the body. These points, called trigger points or muscle knots, develop when muscle fibers remain partially contracted, often from poor posture, injury, or repetitive strain. When pressure is applied directly to these spots, the muscle tension releases and the referred pain pattern often subsides.

The technique works by interrupting the cycle of muscle contraction and fatigue. A therapist uses their fingers, knuckles, or specialized tools to apply sustained, focused pressure on the affected area, typically holding for 30 seconds to a few minutes. This sustained pressure helps the muscle fibers relax and restore normal blood flow to the tissue. A person receiving trigger point therapy may experience brief discomfort during treatment, but relief typically follows as the muscle releases.

Trigger point therapy pairs well with chiropractic care in the Klang Valley region, where practitioners combine it with spinal adjustments and other manual techniques to address underlying structural imbalances. It is particularly useful for conditions like neck stiffness, lower back pain, headaches, and shoulder tension where referred pain patterns make the root cause less obvious. By addressing the muscle knot rather than just treating the pain symptom, trigger point therapy helps restore movement and reduce the likelihood of the problem recurring.
