What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is a partial or incomplete misalignment of a vertebra that chiropractors believe interferes with nerve function and spinal health.
In chiropractic practice, subluxation refers to a partial displacement or restriction of vertebral joint movement that practitioners believe creates nerve interference and affects overall body function. Unlike a full dislocation, which is visible on standard imaging and represents a complete joint separation, a subluxation is characterized by reduced range of motion, improper alignment, or fixation of the vertebrae. Chiropractors use the term clinically to describe joints they identify as dysfunctional or misaligned, often citing palpation techniques and spinal examination findings as diagnostic methods.
The concept remains central to traditional chiropractic philosophy and treatment planning throughout the Klang Valley and beyond. Practitioners argue that correcting subluxations through spinal adjustment restores proper nerve transmission and promotes healing.
Mainstream medicine and major medical organizations, however, do not recognize subluxation as a clinical entity supported by scientific evidence. The term has become a point of distinction between evidence-based spinal care and traditional chiropractic theory. Many modern chiropractors have moved away from the strict subluxation model while others continue to reference it as foundational to their practice. The debate reflects differing approaches to understanding spinal dysfunction and its relationship to systemic health, though contemporary clinical research tends to focus on objective measures like joint mobility and pain reduction rather than subluxation theory.
