What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain, numbness, or weakness in the leg caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, usually where it exits the lower spine.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the human body, becomes compressed or irritated as it exits the lower spine. This compression typically happens in the lumbar region and can result from a herniated disc, bone spur, or vertebral misalignment pinching the nerve root. The condition causes pain that radiates from the lower back or buttocks down one leg, often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg.

Symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the compression. Some people experience mild discomfort, while others face sharp, burning pain that makes walking or sitting difficult. The pain may worsen with certain movements or prolonged positions.

Chiropractors in the Klang Valley commonly address sciatica through spinal adjustments and spinal decompression techniques. These approaches aim to relieve pressure on the nerve by realigning vertebrae, improving disc positioning, and reducing inflammation around the nerve root. Treatment plans are typically tailored to the individual's condition, underlying cause, and symptom severity.
