What is a range of motion (ROM) assessment?

A diagnostic test that measures the extent and quality of movement available in a patient's joints, performed during chiropractic assessment to identify restrictions or abnormalities.

A range of motion assessment is a clinical examination where the chiropractor measures how far your joints can move in different directions. The practitioner guides specific body parts through their natural movement patterns, checking cervical spine flexion and extension, lateral flexion of the lumbar spine, shoulder abduction, hip rotation, and other joint motions to determine what is normal for your structure and what may be limited.

During this test, the chiropractor notes whether movement is smooth and painless, restricted by muscle tightness, or accompanied by discomfort. Some practitioners use basic measurement tools like a goniometer, while others rely on visual assessment and palpation to gauge joint play and soft tissue response.

ROM assessment serves several purposes in chiropractic practice. It establishes a baseline of your current function at the first consultation, identifies which joints or spinal segments are not moving properly, and helps the chiropractor determine whether restrictions stem from joint dysfunction, muscular tension, nerve involvement, or structural issues. The findings inform the treatment plan and later comparisons show whether mobility has improved after care.

This test is standard in Klang Valley chiropractic clinics as part of the initial evaluation process, alongside postural analysis and orthopedic testing, to build an objective picture of your mechanical health before treatment begins.
