What is pelvic tilt?

Pelvic tilt is a deviation in the angle or position of the pelvis, causing the spine to misalign and often resulting in lower back, hip, or postural pain.

Pelvic tilt occurs when the pelvis shifts from its neutral position and rotates either forward (anterior tilt), backward (posterior tilt), or to one side (lateral tilt). The pelvis forms the foundation of the spine, so any rotation disrupts the natural curves of the lumbar and thoracic spine, forcing other vertebrae and muscles to compensate.

Forward pelvic tilt is common among people with desk jobs or prolonged sitting. The hip flexors tighten while the lower back muscles work overtime, creating an exaggerated curve in the lumbar spine. This strains the facet joints and discs. Backward pelvic tilt, often seen in athletes or those with tight hamstrings, flattens the lumbar curve and places pressure on the sacroiliac joint and lower back tissues. Lateral pelvic tilt, where one side drops lower than the other, often signals muscle imbalances or structural issues and can lead to sciatic nerve irritation.

Chiropractors in the Klang Valley assess pelvic position as a core part of diagnosing back pain, because correcting the tilt addresses the source rather than just treating symptoms. Misaligned pelvis throws off hip mechanics, gait, and load distribution through the spine. A chiropractor may evaluate your standing posture, movement patterns, and spinal alignment to identify pelvic tilt and develop a treatment plan. Finding the right practitioner is important.
