What is the difference between a herniated disc and a bulging disc?

A bulging disc is an outward protrusion of the disc material that remains within the outer fibrous layer, while a herniated disc occurs when the inner nucleus ruptures through the outer shell, releasing material into the spinal canal.

Both conditions affect the intervertebral discs that sit between spinal vertebrae, but they differ in severity and the extent of structural damage. A bulging disc occurs when the outer fibrous ring, called the annulus fibrosus, weakens and allows the soft inner nucleus pulposus to push outward. The material stays contained within the disc boundary, so the bulge is usually uniform around the disc's perimeter or localized to one side.

A herniated disc, by contrast, involves a tear or rupture in the annulus fibrosus itself. When this rupture happens, the inner nucleus material leaks out into the spinal canal. This escaped material can press directly on nearby nerve roots or the spinal cord, often causing more significant pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness depending on the location and severity of the herniation.

Bulging discs are common with age and degeneration and may cause no symptoms at all, while herniated discs are more likely to produce noticeable symptoms because of direct nerve contact. Both conditions are frequently evaluated and treated by chiropractors offering spinal decompression and other conservative care approaches. Understanding this distinction helps patients and providers determine the most appropriate course of treatment and expected outcomes.
